Is my LinkedIn profile professional looking, with a professional photo and headline? When is the next time that I will speak with a mentor? Have I prepared questions for my next interview?įinal thoughts: I learned this lesson from multiple instructor pilots before it fully sunk in. Are you within your parameters? Are you flying your plan? In transition, this reminds me to ensure that my actions align with my goals. Performance reminds you to constantly adjust your pitch and power to achieve the desired results. Performance – Are you tracking your course correctly? Performance can alternate between checking your airspeed to your rate of climb to your angle of bank to your engine parameters. These displays provide a much larger screen area with clearer presentations, augmented by a HUD (head-up display) that increases pilot situational awareness particularly during the approach and landing phase. If you can’t do it with the engines you currently have, what do you need to get over that next mountain? Have you done your gap analysis? The A380 cockpit’s main instrument panel has eight identical large interactive displays, with cursor control provided through a track-ball. In transition, this reminds me to make sure I can achieve the goals I’ve set for myself. This causes us to make decisions about how to fly to arrive safely. In high altitude and hot conditions, many engines are not capable of making it over the next mountain. Power – Do you have what it takes to make it over the next obstacle? Power refers to the amount of power the engine is providing your rotor system. It reminds me to consciously orient myself toward success. This reminds me to weed out the extraneous information or responsibilities that do not contribute to getting me to my end state. Pitch can change the easiest with complacent control touch or ambient wind conditions. In transition, this reminds me to set my course and follow it. What is my attitude, airspeed, and vertical speed?.Pitch – Where is the nose of the aircraft? Pitch refers to the orientation of the aircraft in space and it determines your direction as well as your airspeed and your climb or descent. But, like flying, if you simply focus your attention on the right information at the right time to apply the right pressure, you will safely land in your next life cleaner than a Chinook tailgate. In transition, the stakes seem equally high, especially if you are transitioning with a family. If you apply an inch of movement in the wrong direction at the wrong time, it can spell disaster. There are infinite small inputs that seem to have system-wide impacts. The military to civilian transition is like flying a helicopter. As a helicopter pilot, my best instructor pilots taught me to use this simple mantra: pitch, power, and performance. A Qatar Airways pilot has posted a stunning point-of-view clip from the cockpit, showing the incredible sight or lack thereof when landing a plane on a runway. When you are overwhelmed with information and the constant threat of catastrophe, you must focus your attention where it matters most. ![]()
